The BTEC Edexcel Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment is a professional qualification providing career development opportunities for those already in employment within the Construction industry. The program is equally suited to those who may wish to progress on from the HNC in Construction to study at level 5 or other achieve a professional qualification to allow the application for chartered status in the future.
This HND may be used as the Technical Certificate for a Higher Apprenticeship in Construction Site Management (with Sustainability)
This is a 2 year part-time day release course, held one day a week, with attendance between 9.00am to 5.00pm running over 30 weeks from September to May.
The course covers some of the key knowledge and practical skills required in the Construction Sector. It is an 8 unit qualification with the HNC units as a pre requisite, the HND units are as follows:
- Unit 6: Health, safety and welfare for Construction
- Unit 9: Law and Contract for Construction
- Unit 20: Construction Methods and Design Solutions
- Unit 60: Personal and Professional Development
- Unit 17: Project Management for Construction
- Unit 23: Advanced Measurement for Construction
- Unit 26: Properties and Performance of Construction Materials
- Unit 63: Work Based Experience
Teaching and Assessment
There are no external examinations and subjects are assessed through a series of internally set assignments involving a combination of scenario based tasks linked to project work, practical exercises, timed tasks, individual study and presentations.
There are over 30 career choices within the construction professions. Completion of the HND in Construction will provide you with the opportunity to study further at degree level for careers such as:
- Architectural Technologist
- Building Surveyor
- Quantity Surveyor/Estimator
- Site Manager
- Environmental Engineer
- Building Services Engineer
- Facilities Management
The HNC in Construction is a pre-requisite to study for the HND in Construction and Built Environment. Other level 4 qualifications may be considered as recognized prior learning for entry onto the program.
Employment in the Construction Industry is helpful but not a pre-requisite.
All applicants will be considered on individual merit and interviewed to ensure they have the potential to achieve this qualification.
Course fees £2421 per year
An equipment list will be sent out prior to the course starting. Basic equipment will include steel toe-capped safety boots or shoes. Occasionally you may be offered the opportunity to take part in an educational visit for which a contribution may be required.
